Walking

We evolved into a walking club in the 1970’s at the same time as caving and potholing. We developed an appreciation of the beautiful scenery around the Dales so we decided to travel above ground by walking and at a later date, cycling. This has always been a family run club. I have always been very grateful to Penny my wife and children Nick Mark and Samantha for putting up with me and helping me run the club. Friends that have also been a great help over the years are Stuart Phillips, Andrew Davies, Tony O’Dowd, Gavin Mallalue, Jack McPherson, Carol Banister and Steve Deighton. Many thanks guys n gals.

We have always been a very social group that enjoys adventures, e.g. Like walks at Midnight, at places like Black Rocks at Cromford? Starting with a drink at about 8.00pm we will then start walking at about 10.00pm. At midnight we will be at the top of Black Rocks. The locals say if you walk over Black Rocks at midnight on Midsummers night, it will bring you good luck.
(We could all do with some of that.).      Glenn.

November / December

In the winter we go to places like beautiful Goyt Valley just north west of Buxton. We normally park at Errwood car park next to the reservoir. We walked along to Goyt Clough Quarry then up through the woods to the Cat & Fiddle Inn, the second highest pub in England, where we all have lunch. After the food we all start back, walking over Shining Tor, which is 1833 ft high and then along to Cats Tor, which is 1703 ft high. We turned right at Pym Chair down to the street car park and then along the side of Errwood Reservoir back to Errwood car park. By this time it would be very dark. (A TORCH IS VITAL AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR). That’s only an example of one walk that we vary with a different slant on it each year.

January February - Winter

In the winter time we like walking from places like the Snake Inn on the A57 near Snake Pass. We will park in the car park above Snake Inn and walk across the road, turn left then after a few 100 yards turn right along the snake path to meet the Pennine Way on Kinder Scout and back to the A57 Snake Pass. We would all hope to have something to eat at the Snake Inn and hope for a sunny cold clear day with snow on the ground and a big log fire in the pub. That takes me back a couple of year’s when the snow was as big as golf balls and we followed the snow-plough out of Snake Pass before it closed. The food at the Snake Pass Inn is very good. I personally like the Cumberland sausage with real mashed potatoes. If you are bringing your dogs, they will have to stay in the car after the walk while you all eat.

In the winter we love places like Mam Tor, Castleton. We would park in the main car in the Town, please pay the right amount, they DO check the time on the pay and display tickets. The walk would normally go over Mam Tor across Hollins cross and back down into Castleton. Each year the walk would vary.

We love to go to Edale, Grindsbrook, Hayfield, Kinder Downfall, and kinder Scout; Bleak low Hatersage the Edges, Ladybower Dam, Bamford. And more in the winter.

Spring

In the spring we go to places like Lathkill Dale, Bradford Dale, and Monsall Dale etc. When we go to Lathkill Dale we nearly always meet at The Lathkill Hotel for a drink first. While waiting for people to arrive, just stand in front of the hotel and look at the view. It is wonderful and very calming. ( If only I could win the lottery, I would move out there).
